- Treadmill Test (TMT / Exercise Stress Test)
At Maruti Scans and Labs, we offer the Treadmill Test (TMT), also known as an Exercise Stress Test, to evaluate how well your heart functions during physical activity. This non-invasive test helps detect heart conditions such as coronary artery disease (CAD), unexplained chest pain, and exercise-induced arrhythmias.
What is a Treadmill Test?
A Treadmill Test measures your heart’s response to physical exertion. While you walk on a treadmill, your heart rate, blood pressure, and electrical activity (ECG) are continuously monitored. As the treadmill’s speed and incline gradually increase, your heart works harder—allowing doctors to identify any abnormalities in blood flow or rhythm that may not appear at rest.
Why is a Treadmill Test Done?
Your doctor may recommend a TMT to:
- Diagnose coronary artery disease (CAD) or blockages in heart arteries
- Evaluate chest pain, shortness of breath, or palpitations during activity
- Assess heart function after a heart attack or heart surgery
- Monitor the effectiveness of heart medications or treatments
- Determine safe levels of exercise before starting a cardiac rehabilitation program
How is the Test Performed?
The test follows a standard protocol (commonly the Bruce Protocol) and typically takes about 45–60 minutes, including preparation and recovery:
- Preparation:
- Electrodes are placed on your chest to record your ECG.
- A blood pressure cuff is attached to monitor your pressure throughout.
- Your resting heart rate, blood pressure, and ECG are recorded.
- Exercise Phase:
- You begin walking slowly on the treadmill.
- Every 3 minutes, the speed and incline increase to raise your heart rate.
- You are encouraged to walk as long as possible—this is an effort- dependent test.
- You can stop at any time if you feel chest pain, dizziness, severe shortness of breath, or extreme fatigue.
- Monitoring:
- Your ECG, heart rate, and blood pressure are monitored continuously.
- You may be asked to report any symptoms during the test.
- Recovery Phase:
- After stopping, you will walk slowly as the treadmill cools down.
- Monitoring continues for 3–5 minutes until your vitals return to normal.
The test is stopped if:
- You reach your target heart rate
- You develop significant symptoms
- There are concerning changes in your ECG or blood pressure
Preparation for Your TMT
- Avoid eating a heavy meal 2–3 hours before the test
- Do not consume caffeine (coffee, tea, cola, chocolate) for at least 12 hours prior
- Avoid smoking on the day of the test
- Wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes
- Inform our staff about all medications you are taking—some (like beta-blockers) may need to be paused temporarily under your doctor’s guidance
- If you have asthma, diabetes, or any other medical condition, let us know in advance
Understanding Your Results
A cardiologist will interpret your test and look for:
- Changes in the ECG (especially ST-segment depression)
- Abnormal heart rate or blood pressure response
- Development of chest pain or arrhythmias during exercise
Results are typically classified as:
- Negative: No signs of heart disease
- Positive: Indications of reduced blood flow to the heart
- Equivocal: Unclear findings, may require further testing
Your doctor will receive a detailed report and discuss the next steps with you.
