- Digital EEG (Electroencephalogram)
At Maruti Scans and Labs, we offer advanced digital EEG testing to evaluate brain activity with precision and comfort. Our experienced neuro-diagnostic technicians use modern equipment to record and analyze the brain’s electrical signals, supporting accurate diagnosis of neurological conditions.
What is a Digital EEG?
A digital electroencephalogram (EEG) is a non-invasive test that records the brain’s electrical activity using small electrodes placed on the scalp. These electrodes detect brainwave patterns and transmit them to a computer system, where they are digitally recorded and analyzed. Digital EEG offers enhanced clarity, real-time monitoring, and faster reporting compared to traditional methods.
Why is an EEG Done?
An EEG is commonly recommended to:
- Diagnose and monitor epilepsy or seizure disorders
- Investigate causes of unexplained loss of consciousness, blackouts, or fainting spells
- Evaluate memory problems, confusion, or altered mental states
- Assess brain function after head injury or stroke
- Help diagnose sleep disorders, encephalitis, or brain tumors
Types of EEG Tests
- Routine EEG: A standard 20–40 minutes recording, often performed while awake and during light sleep
- Sleep-Deprived EEG: Conducted after reduced sleep to increase the chance of detecting abnormal brain activity
- Ambulatory EEG: A portable system that records brain activity over 24 to 72 hours during normal daily activities
- Video EEG Monitoring: Combines EEG with video recording to correlate physical symptoms with brainwave patterns (available in select clinical settings)
Preparation for Your EEG
- Wash your hair the night before or morning of the test—avoid using oils, gels, or sprays
- Continue taking prescribed medications unless instructed otherwise by your doctor
- For sleep-deprived EEG, follow specific instructions about reduced sleep
- Eat normally and avoid excessive caffeine on the day of the test
- Bring any previous EEG or neurological reports for comparison
What to Expect During the Procedure
- A technician will measure your head and place about 19–21 small electrodes on your scalp using a conductive gel or paste
- The process is painless and does not involve any electrical shocks
- You will be asked to relax, keep your eyes closed, and remain still
- During the test, you may be asked to:
- Open and close your eyes
- Breathe deeply (hyperventilation)
- Look at a flashing light (photic stimulation)
- The test typically lasts 30–45 minutes; longer recordings may be scheduled based on clinical needs
- Video may be recorded simultaneously to assist in diagnosis
Special Considerations for Children
We understand that children may feel anxious or restless during an EEG. At Maruti Scans and Labs, our team is trained to make the experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible for young patients.
- For infants and young children:
- The test is often scheduled during natural sleep times to capture both awake and sleep patterns, which are essential for accurate diagnosis.
- Parents are welcome to stay throughout the procedure to comfort and soothe the child.
- Electrodes are applied with gentle, child-safe paste, and extra care is taken to minimize discomfort during placement.
- For older children and adolescents:
- Our technicians use age-appropriate communication to explain each step and reduce anxiety.
- We encourage children to bring a favorite toy, blanket, or book to help them relax.
- Hyperventilation and photic stimulation are performed only if the child is cooperative and able to follow instructions.
- Sleep EEG for children:
- Often preferred over routine awake EEG, especially in younger children, to reduce movement artifacts and improve diagnostic yield.
- Parents may be asked to keep the child awake earlier than usual or wake them up earlier on the day of the test to help them fall asleep during the recording.
