Spirometry (Pulmonary Function Test – PFT)
What is Spirometry?
Spirometry is a non-invasive breathing test that measures how much air your lungs can hold and how quickly you can exhale it. It is one of the most common and effective pulmonary function tests (PFTs), helping doctors diagnose and monitor conditions like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchitis, and other lung disorders.
Why is Spirometry Done?
Your doctor may recommend a spirometry test to:
- Diagnose breathing problems such as asthma or COPD
- Evaluate symptoms like shortness of breath, chronic cough, or wheezing
- Monitor the progression of a known lung condition
- Assess how well your current treatment (e.g., inhalers) is working
- Check lung function before surgery
- Screen for occupational lung diseases
Types of Spirometry Tests
- Baseline Spirometry: Measures your lung function at rest
- Bronchodilator Reversibility Test: A second test after inhaling a medicine to open your airways, to see if your breathing improves
- Pre- and Post-Exercise Testing: Assesses how your lungs respond to physical activity (if clinically indicated)
Preparation for Your Test
- You will sit comfortably in a chair during the test
- A soft nose clip will be placed to ensure you breathe only through your mouth
- You will be given a sterile mouthpiece connected to the spirometer
- The technician will guide you to:
- Take the deepest breath possible
- Exhale forcefully and quickly into the device for as long as you can
- The test will be repeated at least three times to ensure accuracy and consistency
- If needed, you may be given a bronchodilator and asked to repeat the test after 15 minutes
- The entire process takes about 15–30 minutes and is completely painless
Understanding Your Results
Key measurements include:
- Forced Vital Capacity (FVC): The total amount of air you can forcefully exhale after a full breath
- Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second (FEV1): The amount of air you can blow out in the first second
- FEV1/FVC Ratio: Helps determine if airflow is obstructed or restricted
Your results are compared to normal values based on your age, height, gender, and
ethnicity. A detailed report will be shared with your doctor for clinical interpretation.
