A computerised electrocardiogram (ECG) is a quick, non-invasive test that records the electrical activity of the heart. Small adhesive electrodes are placed on the chest, arms, and legs, and connected with wires to a digital ECG machine that converts these signals into graphic waveforms displayed on a screen or printed for review. Computerised systems allow for precise, rapid analysis, improving diagnostic reliability and reducing reporting time.
Why is an ECG Done?
Your doctor may request an ECG to:
- Detect abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) such as palpitations, skipped beats, or irregular pulses
- Assess the cause of chest pain, dizziness, fainting, or shortness of breath

Preparation for Your ECG

- You will relax on an examination table while electrodes are attached to your skin
- The test itself is painless and takes only a few minutes
- You may need to remain still and quiet for accurate readings
- After the test, the electrodes are removed, and you can resume normal activities immediately
